The day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday in the USA. A lot of people start their Christmas shopping on this day. That is why it has such an importance to retail businesses. The actual origin of the name "Black Friday" is not clear. One suggestion is, that it describes the huge amount of people in the shopping centers, that seem like a black mass. Another theory is, that the retailers start to make profit on this day and eventually write black figures again. Don't mistake the Black Friday with the stock market crash from 1929 - this is called Black Thursday.
