On 9 May, the Schuman Declaration is commemorated, in which the French Foreign Minister proposed to organisate German and French coal and steel production together. This laid the foundation of the European Coal and Steel Community. Besides Germany and France, also Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands participated. The European Union emerged from this community.
